INDIGENOUS ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Welcome to Nuevo Progreso, an Indigenous Shawi community tucked away in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. There are no jobs in the community, no markets, no formal economies. Life revolves around finding ways to eat, something that the people of Nuevo Progreso are good at. However, their world is changing. Population pressures are interfering with their ability to hunt and fish successfully. Climate change is intensifying natural phenomenon and negatively impacting their crops. In response, community members adapt their hunting, fishing, and farming to preserve their preferred ways of life. Through this website, the community invites you to explore their changing world, hoping to dispel assumptions about modern indigenous life and educate in an interesting way.
